Malwarebytes Blog summary: How the government shutdown is influencing cybersecurity jobs

All in all, I found this to be a very interesting article given the fact that it is focused on the Cybersecurity aspect of the government shutdown and it has some surprising facts. First off, we already know that this is the longest government shutdown that America has ever experienced but the article goes on to explain how this will affect our computer lives and security. For example, according to Matthews (2019) 43% of all of the United States Cybersecurity Workforce are not working and laid off, which is pretty bad news. Some good points that Matthews (2019) makes are that these employees could find work in the private sector therefore the government will have to find more talented people when the shutdown ends, it could cause people to shy away from working for the government in the future at a time when the government was already in the process of losing people to the private sector years before this shutdown began. Something else of note that Matthews (2019) goes on to state is the fact that there is so much at stake when it comes to the government and Cybersecurity because the United States critical infrastructure (nuclear plants, electrical grids etc.) is also online and vulnerable and the government needs capable people to protect these assets. The internet is not as safe as it was due to essential resources and enforcement of cybersecurity standards not being available because the government is shut down (Matthews, 2019).
